We are also taking an opportunity to look at stealth bombers in light of the changes over the past years and seeing if we can make them more useful overall. We would like your feedback on this idea and thoughts on this new approach.

It's all about torpedoes!

The main way we are looking at changing the stealth bombers is switching them to fit siege launchers and use torpedoes focusing on a anti-battleship role. Each bomber would gain a damage bonus to its racial damage torpedo of 10% per level) in addition to being able to fit 3 siege launchers as now.

The result of this is much higher damage to larger targets such as battleships but at the cost of range as you have to get much closer to your target. This has pros and cons such as much shorter duration before your torpedo hits and being able to cloak or get away faster after firing but also increases the danger as you have to be extremely close to your targets.

Increased cloaked velocity

To help with the manoeuvring into range, we are looking at increasing the cloaked velocity substantially (so the bomber could have a velocity between 750-1200 m/s). This way the bomber could better keep up and get into range faster with targets for a strike.

These changes would come in addition to some powergrid/cpu and velocity tweaks.

Feedback on this idea is welcome! Very Happy

stealth bombers are being re-worked entirely, ecm is being balanced so scorpions are good again and falcons can't jam from 200k.

I'd really like to read some kind of justification for the original stealth bombers design. What on earth were they meant to be for?

Actually there's a lot of things I'd like to know the original justification for. Capital jump drives? Rooks and falcons?

Stealth Bombers with torps? Hmmm, I think we will see various killmails of ratting turret BS being wasted by lone stealths soon!

a 20-man SB gang + a target painting rapier + ECM. think of the covert cyno alphadeath to be had!

i think we should start working some serious covert cyno action into our roaming gangs if SBs are given torps.

I'm thinking manticore with a couple of multispecs and a scrambler makes an ideal covert tackler. 1200ms cloaked? That's just ridiculous.

it'll have killed any turret battleship it tackles by the time backup arrives...

Bombs were billed as anti-blob, but if beyond that you mean really what it the point of the class existing at all...it's because 'Stealth Bomber' sounds KEWL ;)

Also, I think the ECM ship balance sounds like a good thing.

Edit:
Also, I'm glad I'm working on missile skills at the moment :)

Bombers didn't have bombs originally.

I just had a look at the ECM ship changes. They sound better than the current situation, although I would of course prefer the function of the ECM module was radically changed instead.

They're reducing the range of ECM, and increasing its falloff, so it has reduced effectiveness at long range. The lowslot ECM booser module will become a range booster instead of a strength booster. The Falcon and scorpion have their range bonuses removed and become close-range ships. The rook stays as an ECM sniper (and maybe the blackbird is its Tech1 counterpart? They don't mention it.), but with lower strength than current.

Reduced ECM range is fine as a nerf. Jamming ships die rapidly if they're under 50km from most gangs.

Yeah when I went for the Falcon in the gang fight the other day in a Vaga it died really fast, I assumed others were hitting it until the killmail arrived! :-)

My only real fear is that with ECM nerfed the RR fleets will be unkillable.

Bring your own RR and fat-plate your falcons? Or use rooks?

The falcon will be useless as a 'close range brawler'. It's a caldari gunship with weapon range bonii and only two usable hardpoints (assuming a cyno takes up one). It should really be the rook that becomes the brawler and the falcon a mid range jammer. I think the whole recon class needs rejigging tbh - too many nerfed functions for a ship class desined around ECM. Jammers nerfed, damps are shit, nos don't work and target painters are useless unless you're in a torp boat.

I do worry that it's coming down to tank vs gank again and the opportunity for skill in fights is reducing.

Angular velocity will become the new I-win button with tracking disruptors the norm....... Then they will nerf them.........

I don't know if it's my very weak-EW amarr roots, but I've never been much of a fan of EW and bells and whistles. I much prefer a straight stand-up tank vs gank slug-fest.

I always feel like it sucks when you lose a ship because you couldn't shoot the person attacking you, because they just jam you for the whole fight. I might as well not have brought any fucking guns to the fight in the first place then and just fit the fattest tank possible to try and survive long enough to get away from the fight. Or just not get into them, which means either just ratting/missioning/general "care-bearing" or never leaving the hangar.

*shrugs*

Gotta agree there is too much jam these days but I think the real issue is the range. 200km jam is crap!

That's one element of why I like the change.

The cloaker being the close range one, and the non-cloaker being the long range is better /because/ it makes their roles more difficult. I'll like anything that reduces the impact of a weapon that entirely removes the victim's ability to participate in the fight.

i like the fact that the falcon range is getting reduced it will have to use some of mids for tank like every other recon has to
