Full Version: EVE n00b requires aid!

Hello everyone, I'm reviewing the Apocrypha release of EVE Online for my shadowy paymasters at Videogamer, and since Jamie is an old chum, I thought I'd ask him if it would be okay if I could try to co-opt Statecorp into giving me a helping hand in trying to get representative view of the game in the undoubtedly limited time I'll have with it.

I've not played EVE for a couple of years, so if any of you were able to give me a helping hand over the next week or two in showing me the sights there are to see and giving me a helping hand up the initial learning curve, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm still downloading the client right now - I'll post my character name here when I'm all set up. I should be online a fair bit over the Easter weekend.

You're welcome to give me a shout in game as Astrum Ludus or Astrum Mortis any time, or fire away on here. I'm sure everyone will chip in to answer any questions you have.

Once you've made your character maybe we can have a look at how you can be most involved in our roaming gangs and get you straight in to the action :)

Ah ha! I understand you are otherwise known as Lord Thrawn. I am otherwise known as Jaldo Dron. You might remember me from long, long ago...

Hope to see you in space some time, even if you are only about for a little while.

Lord Thrawn. I haven't gone by that name since... oh, long before this forum was born...

I just go by a plain and simple 'Iain' these days. But it's nice to be remembered.

Depending on how things go, I could be around for quite a while - the PRs are giving me a one year press account, and I gave up on WoW in disgust a few weeks back after the 3.0.8 patch utterly broke the game for me (really weird latency issues, that only seem to affect a fraction of players and ISPs, seemingly randomly all across Europe).

As I said in my first post, I have flirted with EVE before, but not entirely successfully. Mainly because I found the learning curve more of a learning cliff and I didn't really know that many people playing. I'm hoping that with a bit of a helping hand from an established Corp, I might be able to get EVE to put out this time.

Okay, I'll stop anthropomorphising the game now. That's getting a little creepy...

I've set up a Minmitar character called Aodhbeann, and I'll probably be playing quite a bit over the weekend and over the next couple of weeks.

Oddbean?

You need to have ventrillo installed for voice comms. We'll get you sorted with permissions once you're in corp.

Head to reblier and the DED station to apply. We live in PC9 which is only four jumps out of reb. You can also join ingane channel statecorp which iss our public chat channel

Welcome to the suck.

It's a portmanteau of two Irish names, Aodh (meaning 'fire') and Aoibheann (meaning 'beautiful').

Of course, I realise now that I've misspelled it.

Which is doubly tragic, because Aoibheann derives from, Aoibhe, which is the Irish equivalent of Eve. Serves me right for trying to be clever.

Sigh. I think I'll just roll a new character. It's not like I got off the first tutorial screen yet anyway...

I totally spelled my name wrong on my first character creation. Then I went back and realised the name I wanted looked stupid. And so DJ was born.

(Hello!)

I got the name dead right, but managed to make the character portrait look like a particularily stupid gangster swallowing a hamster. If I ever come back, must change that...

I keep hearing rumours that we'll all have to change our avatars come ambulation. I'm quite happy with mine even though it looks like he's taking a shit

To be fair, some of them would look very strange walking around.

pcgf: supplying the industry with wordwhores since 1846. i went by the moniker 'redshift' if your memory for forum non-entities stretches back that far. edit. or was it Statemag? my forum history all blurs into one long orgy of videogames-orientated ASCII onanism tbh.

regardless, the forum just ate a long and detailed post laying out the different paths you could take, but you're basically facing the same problem all new eve players face - that it's fucking terrible right upto the point where it becomes brilliant.

i'm pretty sure most of that brilliance is a direct result of the amount the player has invested in the game upto that point - the rush of escaping an enemy deathsquad's clutches coming from the sheer mind-numbing tedium you endured to afford that shiny ship.

reviewing eve is like explaining how long a piece of string is to somebody who most likely has some kind of string allergy, and the only definitive review of eve will be retrospective. good luck!

as for the improvements, wormholes are cool and add a whole new dynamic to the game but are as-yet not fully exploited. nobody has used them as a pvp stratagem to do anything interesting enough to be remotely newsworthy. t3 is a plaything of the frivolous super-rich, not yet fully implemented and currently a source of a few lengthy volumes of ill-informed forum speculation. the lack of t3 is largely down to the hardcore industrialists not yet farming wormholes with anything approaching efficiency.

Lack of T3 and wormholes not being used as valid stratagem in PVP is because wormholes are too unpredictable and therefore an increased risk.

These two things means T3 will carry on being expensive and only the most fool hardy will exploit WHs as a tactic, unless CCP makes some changes like some sort of module that keeps WH open longer.. or something.

I think everytime HF has found a WH, someone or other has been trapped.

Also it is worth noting exploiting WH is out of the hands of new players. You need some serious damage / tanking to stand a decent chance.

Could be worth it, though. Send a small, very damage focused taskforce through the things, keep hopping until you end up in enemy territory...I know the chances are probably thousands to one, but even if you don't end up in actual enemy territory, you'll probably end up somewhere you can joyride through until your ships are destroyed.

Right, sorry about that chaps - but I had to disappear off the face of the Earth for a little while while I sorted out a few things regarding my impending unemployment...

Now that I've put together some sort of plan to keep me in some sort of gainful employment (and also finished my Script Frenzy, but I digress), I can actually settle down and stick in some serious time into getting this review done.

I've finally got to grips (mostly) with the interface and I'm warping over to Reblier as I type with my crappy, bog-standard Minmatar frigate. I'll be trying to play a whole lot more frequently over the next few weeks, so give me a shout if you're going to be online and hopefully we can do a load of cool stuff and I'll be abusing my free year now that my WoW sub as expired.

I'll be playing as Aodhbeann, despite screwing up her name, so add me to your buddy lists.
