I just upgraded my desktop from not-entirely-legal XP 32-bit to student's free Vista 64-bit.
I've got trouble with my sound, though. I've installed latest drivers from the web for my motherboard and sound card. When my headphones are plugged in, Windows thinks they're unplugged. When I unplug them, Windows thinks they're plugged in.
Can anybody help?

Have a look at Device Manager/Sound-Video-Game Controller.
Right click items shown, then check for –Enable, update driver or roll back.
Also check - Other devices, if listed.
Not quite sure of your total system connection set-up?? Have you two audio outputs?
Speakers - rear connection, headphones - front connection.
Utilising both outputs may disengage or mute one of jack sockets.

Open the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel (or whatever it is called in Windows Vista). Find a place in there where you see the possibility to select the Default device. Wherever you see this, select the X-Fi device.
i think............
After they're all changed to the X-Fi device, then click OK. Now do an audio test whatever way you prefer. If it's working properly, then unplug the X-Fi external device
but if your using the front jack, try swiching them to the mobo/on board sound device

Right-click the speaker icon in the notification area/system tray Choose Playback Devices
I assume you have installed the X-Fi software ?.

That sounds like the most likely kind of cause.
I've managed to get sound working with the back panel on the sound card, after jiggering around with the settings, and realising I needed to restart windows media player to test a new setting.
I can only guess that there was always something wrong with the front panel, but my XP install got around it with software, and this Vista install doesn't.
I can't get microphone input working now, though.
