largely fao jim, because it might just be relevant to his interests, but you nerds might kill a few hours with this...

the interesting thing here imo is that it's built on jquery, a javascript framework. From the youtube clip Outer Empires would appear to be a 'proper' mmo wrote using conventional client-side script embedded into webpages with ajax hooks into a backend database, much like this very page you are reading (arguably another type of mmo, but whatever) which would be kinda like making the Eiffel tower out of lolly sticks and shiny paper if it works.
obviously they may just be left with an unsightly pile of broken lolly sticks and crumpled paper when the dust clears, not only because javascript frameworks are notoriously cpu heavy and iphones et-al are generally a wee bit light in that department, but also because the source is going to be open to anybody who cares to click 'view source'.
either way it's an interesting approach to games development, more akin to the efforts of bedroom coders in the heady days of tape drives, Your Sinclair and acne than the mainstreamization (piss off, it's a word) of an industry geared towards the production of FIFA 2057 (due for release this November).
then again, i thought Beehive Bedlam being built into the sky box heralded a brave new era of gaming so what the fuck do i know?EDITED: 28 May 2009 by RYAN

Mainstreamization?
1. Why the american 'z'?
2. The verbification of the English language leads to the angrification of Owen, and the stabbisation of Ryan....
