They didn't initially have it in BF2, then they implemented it later. It essentially ment that new players joining were automatically assigned to teams in an even distribution, with absolutely no option to switch teams.
What this ment in practice was, you got together with a group of your mates one night and said 'lets go play BF2', then ended up scattered between the 2 teams. They REALLY needed to put in a 'join as squad' option, similar to what Xbox Live has, where it would try to fit your SQUAD into a game, on one team. That way we could actually... y'know. Play with our friends. Instead of getting stuck in a squad with five random people, three of who dont talk at all and just go sniper and run off to grab helicopters, one of who plays irritatingly loud techno music over the in-game com, and one of who is a racist 13 year old.

No problems with that now, as the ingame VOIP doesn't work. Yaaaay. Also the autobalance doesn't really work either - although it does occasionally decide someone's changed teams TOO MANY TIMES and therefore won't let you. Even if you're trying to balance the teams. Guh.
It seems to mostly try and stick you on the same team as your friends, too. With varying degrees of success.
I'm JanekT ingame. Enjoying it! Especially the bits where I end up shooting KIAEddz in the back of the head.
